Turmeric benefits for multiple sclerosis

1

Turmeric benefits for multiple sclerosis is something that you should know. Turmeric as an antioxidant can be important for people with multiple sclerosis. That is why we stress on the use of turmeric benefits for multiple sclerosis as supplement in Dr Klenner's therapy for multiple sclerosis. We suggest you to read the following article on the Turmeric benefits concerning in several health conditions. (Taken from the Medical Center of the Universitiy of Maryland). You can also read this extremely helpful article concerning turmeric benefits.

Turmeric (Curcuma longa) has been used for 4,000 years to treat a variety of conditions. Studies show that turmeric may help fight infections and some cancers, reduce inflammation, and treat digestive problems, and it has gotten a lot of press lately.

But remember several facts when you hear news reports about turmeric. First, many studies have taken place in test tubes and animals, and turmeric may not work as well in humans. Second, some studies have used an injectable form of curcumin, the active substance in turmeric. Finally, some of the studies show conflicting evidence.

Turmeric is widely used in cooking and gives Indian curry its flavor and yellow color. It is also used in mustard and to color butter and cheese. Turmeric has been used in both Ayurvedic and Chinese medicine as an anti-inflammatory, to treat digestive and liver problems, skin diseases, and wounds.

Curcumin is also a powerful antioxidant. Antioxidants scavenge molecules in the body known as free radicals, which damage cell membranes, tamper with DNA, and even cause cell death. Antioxidants can fight free radicals and may reduce or even help prevent some of the damage they cause.

In addition, curcumin lowers the levels of two enzymes in the body that cause inflammation. It also stops platelets from clumping together to form blood clots.

Research suggests that turmeric may be helpful for the following conditions:

Indigestion or Dyspepsia

Curcumin stimulates the gallbladder to produce bile, which some people think may help improve digestion. The German Commission E, which determines which herbs can be safely prescribed in Germany, has approved turmeric for digestive problems. And one double-blind, placebo-controlled study found that turmeric reduced symptoms of bloating and gas in people suffering from indigestion.

Ulcerative colitis

Turmeric may help people with ulcerative colitis stay in remission. Ulcerative colitis is a chronic disease of the digestive tract where symptoms tend to come and go. In one double-blind, placebo-controlled study, people whose ulcerative colitis was in remission took either curcumin or placebo, along with conventional medical treatment, for 6 months. Those who took curcumin had a relapse rate much lower than those who took placebo.

Stomach Ulcers

Turmeric does not seem to help treat stomach ulcers. In fact, there is some evidence that it may increase stomach acid, making existing ulcers worse. (See "Precautions" section.)

Osteoarthritis

Because of its ability to reduce inflammation, researchers have wondered if turmeric may help relieve osteoarthritis pain. One study found that people using an Ayurvedic formula of herbs and minerals with turmeric, winter cherry (Withinia somnifera), boswellia (Boswellia serrata), and zinc had less pain and disability. But it' s impossible to know whether it was turmeric or one of the other supplements — or all of them together — that was responsible.

Heart Disease

Early studies suggested that turmeric may help prevent atherosclerosis, the buildup of plaque that can block arteries and lead to heart attack or stroke. In animal studies, an extract of turmeric lowered cholesterol levels and kept LDL "bad" cholesterol from building up in blood vessels. Because it stops platelets from clumping together, turmeric may also prevent blood clots from building up along the walls of arteries. But a double-blind, placebo-controlled study found that taking curcumin, the active ingredient in turrmeric, at a dose of up to 4 g per day did not improve cholesterol levels.

Cancer

There has been a great deal of research on turmeric's anti-cancer properties, but results are still very early. Evidence from test tube and animal studies suggests that curcumin may help prevent or treat several types of cancers, including prostate, breast, skin, and colon cancer. Its preventive effects may be because it is a strong antioxidant, protecting cells from damage. More research is needed. Cancer should be treated with conventional medications. Don' t use alternative therapies alone to treat cancer. If you choose to use complementary therapies along with your cancer treatment, make sure you tell all your doctors.

Bacterial and Viral Infections

Test tube and animal studies suggest turmeric may kill bacteria and viruses. But researchers don' t know whether it would work in people.

Uveitis

A preliminary study suggests curcumin may help treat uveitis, an inflammation of the eye' s iris. In one study of 32 people with chronic anterior uveitis, curcumin was effective as corticosteroids, the type of medication usually prescribed. More research is needed.
Plant Description:

A relative of ginger, turmeric is a perennial plant that grows 5 – 6 feet high in the tropical regions of Southern Asia, with trumpet-shaped, dull yellow flowers. Its roots are bulbs that also produce rhizomes, which then produce stems and roots for new plants. Turmeric is fragrant and has a bitter, somewhat sharp taste. Although it grows in many tropical locations, the majority of turmeric is grown in India, where it is used as a main ingredient in curry.
Parts Used:

The roots, or rhizomes and bulbs, are used in medicine and food. They are generally boiled and then dried, turning into the familiar yellow powder. Curcumin, the active ingredient, has antioxidant properties. Other substances in this herb have antioxidant properties as well.
Available Forms:

Turmeric is available in the following forms:

Capsules containing powder
Fluid extract
Tincture

Because bromelain increases the absorption and anti-inflammatory effects of curcumin, it is often combined with turmeric products.
How to Take It:

Pediatric

Turmeric supplements haven' t been studied in children, so there is no recommended dose.

Adult

The following are doses recommended for adults:

Cut root: 1.5 – 3 g per day
Dried, powdered root: 1 – 3 g per day
Standardized powder (curcumin): 400 – 600 mg, 3 times per day
Fluid extract (1:1) 30 – 90 drops a day
Tincture (1:2): 15 – 30 drops, 4 times per day

Precautions:

The use of herbs is a time-honored approach to strengthening the body and treating disease. Herbs, however, can trigger side effects and may interact with other herbs, supplements, or medications. For these reasons, you should take herbs with care, under the supervision of a health care provider.

Turmeric in food is considered safe.

Turmeric and curcumin supplements are considered safe when taken at the recommended doses. However, taking large amounts of turmeric for long periods of time may cause stomach upset and, in extreme cases, ulcers. People who have gallstones or obstruction of the bile passages should talk to their doctor before taking turmeric.

If you have diabetes, talk to your doctor before taking turmeric supplements. Turmeric may lower blood sugar levels, and when combined with medications for diabetes could cause hypoglycemia (low blood sugar).

Although it is safe to eat foods with turmeric, pregnant and breastfeeding women should not take turmeric supplements.

Because turmeric may act like a blood-thinner, you should stop taking it at least 2 weeks before surgery. Tell your doctor and surgeon that you have been taking turmeric.
Possible Interactions:

If you are being treated with any of the following medications, you should not use turmeric or curcumin in medicinal forms without first talking to your health care provider.

Blood-thinning Medications — Turmeric may make the effects of these drugs stronger, raising the risk of bleeding. Blood-thinners include warfarin (Coumadin), clopidogrel (Plavix), and aspirin, among others.

Drugs that reduce stomach acid — Turmeric may interfere with the action of these drugs, increasing the production of stomach acid:

Cimetidine (Tagamet)
Famotidine (Pepcid)
Ranitidine (Zantac)
Esomeprazole (Nexium)
Omeprazole
Lansoprazole (Prevacid)

Diabetes Medications — Turmeric may make the effects of these drugs stronger, increasing the risk of hypoglycemia (low blood sugar).

Constipation

The Importance of Bowel Function

The intestine is divided into two major sections: small intestine and large intestine. The small intestine is about 6 meters (20 feet) long and the large intestine has a larger width but is only 1.5 meters (5 feet) long. The small and large intestines perform different functions. The small intestine is where the most extensive part of digestion occurs. Most food products are absorbed in the small intestine. The large intestine is responsible for absorption of water and excretion of solid waste material. Food and waste material are moved along the length of the intestine by rhythmic contractions of intestinal muscles. Having regular bowel cleanses in MS is crucial because among other things your intestine is one of the most important detoxifying organs. If you want your body to deal with your disease instead of loading it with extra very dangerous toxins make sure you have a good daily bowel movement in order to:

  • Clean, revitalize and detoxify your body.
  • Lower toxins in your body, which will help increase your physical health and energy levels.
  • Have a healthier immune system, which means you will get sick less often.

The various health problems that occur in the human colon take place when impacted fecal matter and toxins are allowed to remain in the intestines for a long period of time when they’re not being eliminated properly. The longer this waste material sits in your colon, the more likely it is that these toxins will be absorbed into your blood stream.

As these toxins remain in your body, you become more susceptible to health problems like irritable bowel syndrome, colitis, diarrhea, weight problems, haemorrhoids, joint pains, vision problems, loss of memory – to name a few and of course feeling your MS symptoms more intensely.
The colon absorbs vitamins, salts, nutrients, and water. When these essential, life-giving ingredients are being properly absorbed, we feel good. But when the colon is not working well it begins to absorb toxins into the blood stream rather than expelling them. The result is a myriad of problems ranging from constipation and gas, to candida (Candidiasis), diverticulitis, and various other chronic health issues. The colon plays host to a zoo of bacteria: over one hundred trillion microorganisms (fungus, parasites, worms etc) call the colon home. There are more microorganisms in the colon than are contained within the skin, heart, bone, brain, and the rest of the body’s cells combined. A proper balance of healthy bacteria must be maintained inside the colon to avoid being constantly plagued with digestive ailments.

My doctor says that the most severe diseases come from the colon. Some toxins found in the intestines are used to cause cancer to mice within weeks for special experiments!!! A day of a bad bowel cleanse can be generally a bad day according to experience. Constipation is a chronic common problem to most MS patients and can certainly cause symptoms that have remained calm for some time, suddenly cause a bad day by appearing again, or make symptoms that you may currently have feel much worse. Constipation in MS may have both neurological as well as nutritional base. In most cases  good nutrition combined with the right supplements can be extremely helpful.

  • Nutrition.

Be sure of the kind and amount of water you drink. Make sure it’s clean, fresh and at least 1 lt per day.
Have all of your vitamins in time and make sure you have the correct Calcium/Magnesium analogy. The types we suggest taking is Calcium Carbonate, Citrate (same goes for Magnesium). I take the Citrate for both and works fine. Make sure: a) Calcium should be taken on it’s own, at least 1 hour before a meal, or several hours after. The reason for this is that Calcium is “antagonistic” to Magnesium, plus the fact, that calcium has been proven to “grab” and take with it, micronutrients, vitamins, that are taken with it. b) CALCIUM, which is important, and works in many of the same ways as magnesium, when it comes to relaxing muscles and blood vessels, relieving spasticity, etc., can cause constipation, however, by balancing it with the correct amount of magnesium there will be no problems. c) Raise your magnesium, until you find your own level that brings out soft easy stools, that are passed once, or even twice daily, clearing the colon.

d) Take your Magnesium WITH all of your other vitamins at meals. e) There is something else concerning magnesium which I would suggest as a last option. Use magnesium Oxide type additionally to the Calcium / Magnesium intake. It’s like a mild natural cathartic. Use a small amount because it is strong (70mg at a time). The best way to have ν natural and long term control of your constipation is by applying all of the above and use any type of cathartic as a last option at the same time with the rest of the measures not more than three times weekly.

  • Try to move or exercise as much as your condition allows you. Exercise with the help of a professional will improve your mobility and bowel function.

SPICES and some fruits MAY HELP!

A good nutritional program is a necessity in order to maintain a good bowel health. The protocol stresses on a high protein diet but this is not enough on it’s own. You should combine your protein (fish, meat, sea algae) with “good” carbs  like vegetables (juicing of 2-3 different vegetables is better for absorption – avoid artichoke and aubergine) and fruits (avoid anything that is too sweet, orange and grapes because they are very acidic and have a high glycemic load). Try to create a ratio of 1:3 proteins to good carbs. Try using olive oil on a daily basis. Also it is good to have a food allergy/intolerance test to see what foods you may eat. Definitely quit gluten (bread, spaghetti, wheat, rye, barley), any kind of milk and diary (I think at least a three month quit of all dairy is necessary and then try to eat some goat or sheep yogurt or cheese – NOT DAIRY CATTLE PRODUCTS), sugar, mushrooms. Also quit carbs with a high glycemic load such as rice, corn or starch (eg potatoes). Replace the above with milks from almond, coconut etc from health food stores or with gluten free bread (amaranth, quinoa, millet) but in low quantities. Make sure you eat at specific times every day and generally that everything happens in a systematic way. Don’t eat very late at nights, food shouldn’t be taken later than 2 hours before bedtime,  except a small snack.. Don’t skip meals. Make sure you eat enough food but not excessive portions. Everything about the protocol must be done in a systematic way for best results.
Many spices are used against Candida overgrowth and for their antioxidant, anti fungus properties. Grape fruit is against Candida (not in juice). Also berries are known for their antioxidant effects and effectiveness on the bowel.
Add some Turmeric spice along with your meals. It comes as a powder and it’s extremely antioxidant as well as antifungal spice. You can either cook it but simultaneously make sure you use it raw, just use it like pepper. It comes from the root of the Curcuma long plant and has a tough brown skin and deep orange flesh. It is a powerful medicine that has long been used by the Indian and Chinese systems of medicine as an anti-inflammatory agent to treat a wide variety of conditions. Peppers can be good (black pepper, cayenne pepper, chili pepper) Cinnamon and nutmeg is considered antifungal and said to have antimicrobial properties also. You can use it with most of your fruits. You shouldn’t have an excessive consumption of fruits though.

6. Beverages like unsweetened organic cocoa. Cocoa powder is low in fat and an excellent antioxidant.
7. Chlorella is a magic solution for helping the bowel normal function. Chlorophyll, is found in all green vegetables, especially the green, leafy vegetables. The problem we find here is that food greens contain less than half of one percent chlorophyll. Alfalfa, from which chlorophyll is commercially extracted, has only 8 or 9 pounds per ton, about 0.2% when extracted, and alfalfa is one of the plants highest in chlorophyll. Get Chlorella tablets and use 2-3 grams daily. Increase the dose slowly. Chlorella cannot be toxic because it is basically a food. See more on Chlorella

DEFINITELY QUIT
The most important thing to cut out is sugar.  This includes all cookies, candies and anything else of that nature. Yeast feeds off sugar and the only way to keep it at bay is to starve it.
Vinegar must also be avoided as it is depletes the stomach of acids and can cause inflammation.  The only vinegar that has been known to successfully combat yeast is apple cider vinegar and it can be used as a food or as a wash. It’s a little odd, but it appears to have an alkalizing effect inside the body and out.
Mushrooms must also be avoided for obvious reasons.  They are the most common fungus among us! Some of the above are suggestions, not rules. You should check them on yourself and see how they affect you. Anything you try which makes you feel uncomfortable in any way (like cocoa or cinnamon) you should stop at once. Of course some of them are a must like quitting sugar and vinegar and having a combined healthy nutrition.

  • Digestive Enzymes
"Our Best Quality Choice":

Multiple Sclerosis Nutritional SupplementsType: Enzymedica's Digestive blends for good digestion and therapeutic use.

Potency: Depends on what you or your healthcare practitioner suggests. One very good choice is ViraStop (60 or 120 capsules) or for a stronger use ViraStop 2x. This product helps digest protein and supports immune function and provides you with 150,000 units of activity (double if ViraStop 2x is used). Protease is able to dissolve almost all proteins as long as they are not components of living cells. Viruses are cell parasites consisting of nucleic acids covered by a protein film. Parasites, fungal forms and bacteria are made up of protein. Virastop contains eight different proteases which can break down undigested protein, cellular debris, and toxins in the blood, sparing the immune system this task. The immune system can then concentrate its full action on the invasion.

Depending on your condition you may choose other types which include other blends (amylase, lipase etc) also but breaking down protein in many levels is a must for your nutrition.

Other Ingredients: None

Purchase from: Here

Dosage: For maintenance, take one capsule two times a day, one hour before or two hours after a meal (empty stomach). For Therapeutic effect Virastop should be taken three to four times a day. More may be taken if needed.

Turmeric… I didn’t know that!

0

Recently one friend of mine who just began the protocol informed me of this yellow spice. Turmeric. After searching a bit I was convinced to buy some. I did and realized that besides it’s really different taste (rather peppery) it is a really healthy spice widely spread in India and known for it’s unique properties. In fact if it is as healthy as they say I think it will become my favorite and most commonly used spice. I think it is an excellent choice to add to your diet. This is what I’ve found about turmeric, Multiple Sclerosis….and more.

NEW ORLEANS (Reuters Health) – Preliminary studies in rats suggest that curcumin, a compound found in the curry spice turmeric, may block the progression of multiple sclerosis (MS).
According to researcher Dr. Chandramohan Natarajan of Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee, rats with an MS-like illness showed little or no signs of disease symptoms after being injected with curcumin, while animals without the treatment went on to severe paralysis.

“We got a very good inhibition of the disease by treating with curcumin,” Natarajan told Reuters Health. He presented the findings here Tuesday at the annual Experimental Biology 2002 conference.”

“In their 30-day study, Natarajan and co-researcher Dr. John Bright gave injections of 50- and 100-microgram doses of curcumin, three times per week, to a group of mice bred to develop a disease called experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE)—an autoimmune condition used by researchers as a model for multiple sclerosis because it also results in the slow erosion of myelin. They then watched the rats for signs of MS-like neurological impairment.”

“By day 15, rats who had not received curcumin developed EAE to such an extent that they displayed complete paralysis of both hind limbs, according to Natarajan.

In contrast, rats given the 50-microgram dose of the curry compound showed only minor symptoms, such as a temporarily stiff tail. And rats given the 100-microgram dose appeared completely unimpaired throughout the 30 days of the study.

The results didn’t really surprise Natarajan. “In Asian countries, such as India, China, who are eating more spicy foods, more yellow compounds like curcumin…there are only very, very rare reports of MS,” he pointed out. He said the doses the rats received were roughly equivalent in human terms to those found in a typical Indian diet.

Q: You mention using turmeric as part of the treatment for multiple sclerosis (MS). Can you give me some information on its benefits for people with MS?

– Antonio Santillan

A: Turmeric (Curcuma longa) is the yellow spice most familiar in Indian cooking and American prepared mustard. I recommend it for all inflammatory disorders and for autoimmune conditions, including MS. As you may know, MS begins with localized inflammatory damage to the myelin sheaths surrounding nerve fibers, due to an attack by the immune system. I recommend both turmeric and ginger, also a natural anti-inflammatory, for treatment of the inflammation that people with MS experience. Interesting results of laboratory research published in the June 15, 2002 issue of the Journal of Immunology suggest that turmeric may have more far-reaching effects for MS patients.

The researchers at Vanderbilt University Medical Center found that turmeric blocked the progression of an MS–like disease in mice. Although these findings are preliminary, the mice showed little or no sign of the symptoms of the disease after being injected three times a week with 50 and 100 microgram doses of curcumin, a compound found in turmeric. A group of mice who didn’t get the injections went on to develop severe symptoms of the disease.

The researcher who directed the study noted that in India and China, where people eat more spicy foods and more yellow compounds like curcumin, MS is a very rare disease. The amounts of curcumin the mice received were about the same as humans would consume in a typical Indian diet. No one knows how curcumin might block progression of MS. But these intriguing results suggest that eating foods flavored with turmeric might help. As an alternative, you can take turmeric extracts, such as New Chapter’s Turmericforce.

By the way, I believe that extracts of whole turmeric are more effective therapeutically than isolated curcumin. I’m afraid it’s going to take some time for researchers here to realize that the part does not equal the whole.
